Junrell Fuentes Revilla was riding his motorbike in the highlands near Cebu, Philippines, in late December when he was followed by a dog.

The dog whined and barked, pleading for Revilla to pay attention to him. The motorcyclist sensed the dog was attempting to communicate with him, so he came to a halt and approached the dog.

Revilla was taken into a trash and toward a moving bundle on the ground by the dog. Gea Ybarita, a staff member at Hope for Strays, told The Dodo, “To Revilla’s amazement, he spotted a newborn wrapped in a brown towel.” “Because it’s on top of the mountain, the place where the baby was found is isolated.”

Revilla took the baby and rushed it to the local police station, where the Department of Social Welfare took over. The baby was located just in time and was in good health thanks to the dog’s fast thinking.

When news of the stray dog’s bravery in the local press, volunteers from the Hope for Strays rescue went into the mountains in search of the brave puppy. Instead, they came found a man who claimed ownership of the dog, Blacky.

“He directed us to his house, and to our surprise, Blacky and three other dogs were there,” Ybarita recalled. “We’ve established that he isn’t a stray in the least.”

Although the rescuers were happy that Blacky had found a loving home, it was clear that the dog and his family still required assistance. “[Blacky’s owner] remarked, ‘No matter how difficult life is, even if I’m poor, I feed all of my dogs and provide excellent care for them,’” Ybarita said.

Blacky and his family have got an influx of community support, providing food, pet supplies, and other items. While Blacky may not realize it, he has altered the course of his life, that of his family, and that of one very lucky newborn girl.
